National initiatives

There have been a number of initiatives over the past few years which have been initiated by CHASTE or which we have had close involvement.

These have included:

Not For Sale

Our campaign to persuade the Government to ratify the Palermo Protocol. The UN Palermo Protocol seeks to define trafficking and put in place measures for its erradication. This campaign along with the work of others led to ratification of the Protocol in February 2006.

time for a®rest and Christmas Campaign 2006

Our campaign to persuade the Government to sign the Council of Europe Convention against Trafficking. The Convention seeks to implement in domestic legislation measures to protect and support women who have been trafficked. This campaign along with the work of others led to an agreement by the Government in January 2007 to sign the Convention, which later took place on 23rd March 2007.(See press release pages for more information)

CHASTE Round Table on Housing

The CHASTE Round Table on housing has inspired the opening of three faith funded safe houses in 2006 and early 2007. See our safe housing pages.

CHASTE Round Table on Demand

CHASTE has initiated a Round Table on Demand to deal with the issue of why trafficking finds a market in the UK. Please contact CHASTE for further details.

The United Kingdom Human Trafficking Centre

Following the success of the police operations in the UK against trafficking (Operation Pentameter) the Government announced the setting up of the UKHTC as a centre of excellence in addressing trafficking. It is a police led multi-agency unit which researches, advises on police operations and places women in safety. CHASTE worked closely with the police during Operation Pentameter and now sits on the Board of UKHTC.
